The drive from Woodland Park was pretty and relaxing, even though coming down Trout Creek Pass into Buena Vista seemed steeper than the listed 5.2% grade. I guess that’s because I just had new front brakes put on the truck in Colorado Springs, and I was very determined to NOT ride them. We brought our lunch and found a good place to stop and eat it in Poncha Springs.   If you ever need to stop there, go to the Visitor’s Center at the junction of Hwy 50 and Hwy 285 (there is lots of room to pull in and turn around).  After lunch we went up and over Poncha Pass (pretty mild), through Saguache (for the uninitiated, it’s pronounced Saw-watch), Del Norte, South Fork, and then up into Creede.

For the second year in a row we are staying in Creede at Mountain Views (not to be confused with Mountain View (singular) in Canon City… but I highly recommend them both).   I don’t want to retake take a bunch of pictures that I already had from last year…. so you can click below to see last year’s pics.

July 2017 - Canon City / Creede / Santa Fe

Back to 2018…   We took a day trip (without the rig!) to see the North Clear Creek Falls, and then up (and over) Slumgullion Pass, which, at an over 9% grade is nothing to sneeze at.   The falls are pretty cool and well worth the stop, and Lake City has lots of shops and places to eat.   We ate lunch at the Packer Saloon and Cannibal Grill.

And we found a Moose Nativity that was just so funny we had to get it.
